CAPRICORN NEW MOON
A new moon in Capricorn is the perfect start to a fresh new year! New moons represent the end of an old lunar cycle and the beginning of a new one. Capricorn is the cardinal earth sign, designed to take initiative in the material world. And tomorrow’s new moon even happens on a Monday, the beginning of a new week. Together, they’re a powerful combination to refresh us for the advent of 2025!
This new moon is occurring the day before New Year’s Eve, on Monday December 30th, at 2:27pm Pacific Time. The Sun and Moon will be conjunct at 9 degrees of Capricorn. While I broke down the basics of Capricorn in my last post, the new moon in this sign brings more opportunities for emotional maturity and accountability. Mental or energetic changes can take place immediately, but emotional shifts take time, as we process feelings through the slow medium of our physical bodies. This is where the patience of earth sign Capricorn comes in handy. The sign of the sea-goat is all about building sturdy foundations and lasting legacies, step by step and brick by brick.
Capricorn is the sign of challenges; it’s the energy that allows us to do difficult things. It reminds us that hard doesn’t equal bad, and easy doesn’t necessarily mean good. Rarely, if ever, do we instantaneously manifest something that’s truly worthwhile. Challenges ultimately make life meaningful and rewarding to live, and Capricorn relishes in overcoming these obstacles with quiet pride and dignity. As 2025 promises to be a rather challenging year - on both the mundane and astrological levels - Capricorn supplies us the perfect energy to move into this next year with clarity, focus and determination. It beckons us to give this all we’ve got, to see what we can really accomplish when we’re willing to commit to and sacrifice for our cause.
What if we’re too afraid to climb the mountain or dive into the ocean that the sea-goat sets before us? What if we balk at the challenge, wasting our time on frivolous distractions? Then the desire for progress and accomplishment will stall out in pointless, hypocritical attempts to control those around us. We’ll accumulate tension as we lie to ourselves, avoiding our own gaze in the mirror. And we’ll feel more lonely as our self-respect erodes, affecting our ability to connect with ourselves and others.

Thankfully, we have some celestial support to help us make the most of this moment. Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, will sit in a sextile to the new moon from its position in Pisces. This aspect stimulates the sea-goat’s hardworking integrity, and allows us to draw strength from our connection to the Piscean emotional collective.
But it would hardly be a Capricornian moment without some challenging aspects as well. This new moon will loosely square the lunar nodes at 1 degree of Libra and Aries. We’ll have a powerful opportunity to take on the collective challenges presented by these nodes before they change signs next month. The new moon will also loosely square Chiron in Aries, which stations direct today (ending its retrograde) and so is at its strongest influence. This highlights the importance of healing our wounds around interpersonal conflict, so that we can work together to meet the new year and build our new world.
